New Car Seat Law

Heads up parents! There's a new law that takes effect on January 1, 2012 that extends the use of booster seats to children under 8 unless at least 4 feet and 9 inches tall. The limit previously imposed was on children up to the age of 6 or weighing less than 60 lbs.

DD2 is on the petite side and DH has jokingly said that she will forever need a booster seat. I may have to bring out my welding helmet and tools and just weld that booster seat into the car. LOL! She is turning 7 already in February but people sometimes mistake her for DD3's twin when we are out. And DD3 is 4 years old! They do not look alike but they are almost the same size. They sometimes share clothes for goodness' sake!

This new law does not change what we already currently do but I know of other families who will have to get their kids back on booster seats. It will definitely make it safer for kids since seat belts are designed for adults and do not adequately protect children if used without booster seats. DH and I have always been on the safe side and continued to use booster seats way past the previous 6 yr old limit. DD1 who is now 8 still uses one.

If you've got a child who is under 8 years old, make sure to put that booster seat to use. I bet that cops will be extra vigilant the first few months in 2012.
